Diabetes Scotland has appointed John Kinnear as the charity’s new National Director.

As part of Diabetes UK, Diabetes Scotland supports people living with the condition, campaigns for improved care, and raises money to fund vital research.

John, who moves into the role from a strategic position within Diabetes UK, took up the position on 17 July 2023, replacing Angela Mitchell who is now Head of Scotland at Nesta.

Like many of you, our Scotland team began working from home when the coronavirus pandemic took hold.

But we've still been just as busy. We have adapted our services and are offering support and advice in different ways, all with the aim of ensuring that people living with diabetes can live well.

Since lockdown began, Diabetes Scotland has been hosting online discussion events with diabetes experts and healthcare professionals. 

This autumn, we will be continuing our series of online events on Zoom and invite you to join us.

Events are free to attend but you have to register in advance to confirm your place and receive meeting log in details.  We also welcome questions in advance to email scotland@diabetes.org.uk

We know that living with diabetes can be challenging and that you may have lots of questions during this period of uncertainty.

Since lockdown began in March, many routine diabetes appointments have been cancelled or postponed. This can be worrying if you have questions about managing your diabetes and don't know who to ask.

Our Diabetes Online Events are held via Zoom and give you the opportunity to hear from healthcare experts and ask any questions you may have.

Volunteers from across Scotland have been honoured with Inspire Awards in recognition of their dedicated support for the diabetes community. 

Sadly, we could not host our usual celebration event this year but we tried the best we could to capture the magic in online ceremonies held over four evenings.  

We were delighted that over 100 people joined us for at least one of the events, with several people joining us every night.

People with diabetes in Scotland are encouraged to join new online groups run by Diabetes Scotland while they are staying at home and following social distancing measures.

We have over 30 local groups across Scotland which offer support to people living with diabetes. Of course, not everyone can attend a group, especially now as we’re advised against all but essential trips out of our homes because of coron

During this period of social distancing and isolation, it’s very important that we look after both our physical and mental health as best we can. 

We are introducing mindfulness and yoga via online video link this month.

These twice-weekly sessions will be run by Zen yoga and mindfulness teacher Donna Booth of Vitality Retreat, based in the far north of Scotland.
