World Diabetes Day 2024
World Diabetes Day is on 14 November 2024.
If people knew...how that well-meaning comment actually made someone with diabetes feel, how many decisions they had to make in a day, or how important it is to see who they are behind their diabetes, it would make a huge difference. It does make a huge difference.
So this #WorldDiabetesDay we are highlighting the voices of the diabetes community to open up a conversation around the impact of diabetes stigma and start changing the mindset. Find out below how you can get involved.
Nobody sees it. The middle of the night jelly babies to treat your hypo. The stress of doing the weekly food shop. The raised eyebrows when your diabetes tech beeps in the office. The fact they weren’t the first person this week to ask ‘are you sure you should be eating that?’ or suggest diabetes is somehow because of something you did. The complexity of carb counting. ‘Making the joke’ before anyone else does, to get it out of the way.
Nobody asked for this. Diabetes is a complex serious condition, and oversimplifying what it means to live with diabetes, and why it develops, can contribute to harmful stigma.
