Today is a landmark day for diabetes care in Wales with the launch of the new Quality Statement on Diabetes Care delivered by Health Minister Eluned Morgan live at the Senedd in Cardiff.
As we celebrate Diabetes Week 2023, Diabetes UK Cymru welcomes the Welsh Government’s renewed commitment to improving diabetes care across Wales.
This is the first Quality Statement for diabetes care in Wales and replaces the 2016-2020 Diabetes Delivery Plan for Wales. There are four main areas to highlight from a Diabetes UK Cymru perspective:
Lucy Belk, 24 from Wrexham was first referred to a specialist diabetes psychologist when she was 15.
Lucy said: “Diabetes has been a huge part of my life. My mother said that she was less scared of the lymphoma than the diabetes, because diabetes doesn’t go away. When I was a child, I didn’t understand why I was at the hospital or the implications of my health problems.
Four autoimmune conditions, bereavement and problems with her employer led Kimberley to really struggle with her mental health, but mental health support helped her recover.
Natalie Holborow, 32, a marketeer and poet from Swansea was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was eight years old.
She said: “It was a confusing time to be diagnosed - the doctors used long words and I had to rely on trying to decipher the facial expressions of medical staff and parents to realise that this was serious.

In some areas, people living with diabetes do not have access to psychological support and they either have to wait years or are referred to services that are not specialised in diabetes.
Ebony Hussey, 30, from Caldicot has lived with type 1 diabetes since she was a toddler and has had lots of ups and downs through her journey with the condition.
