FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors will be phased out in the UK by the end of August 2025, meaning that people living with diabetes who use the sensors will need to transition to using FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 lets you check your glucose levels without having to prick your finger. It is now a real-time continuous glucose monitor (CGM), although you can still scan the sensor to see your glucose readings if you want to.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 is offered on the NHS to people who qualify, or alternatively you can self-fund these sensors.
What do FreeStyle Libre 2 users need to do next?
Abbott, the makers of the FreeStyle Libre 2, will begin to phase out these sensors, and you will need to replace your prescription by the end of August 2025.
Abbott will ask users to speak to their diabetes healthcare team at your next appointment so they can update their prescription to FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors.
If you self-fund your FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors, you should select FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor the next time you place an order with Abbott.
If you use FreeStyle Libre 3 sensors then you will not be impacted.
What is the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus?
The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor has been available on prescription in the UK since 1 April 2024.
It works with the FreeStyle Libre 2 reader and FreeStyle LibreLink app, so FreeStyle Libre 2 users will not have to download another app to use on your smartphone.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor sends real-time glucose readings straight to compatible smartphones, and has a 15-day wear time. It is suitable for children from the age of two years and above, and for adults living with diabetes.
