Saad was a student at De Montfort University in Leicester.
He is also a Diabetes UK Community Champion; one of a growing group of individuals we have trained who are dedicated to raising awareness of diabetes in local Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities.
The programme is a three year partnership with De Montfort where students train to become Community Champions.
When Saad signed up, we were aiming to train 100 Champions through the project over three years. Since we are already well on our way to 50, we’ve become more ambitious across our whole programme, aiming for 1,000 people to qualify by the end of 2016.
Saad has since graduated, but is continuing his work as a Diabetes UK Community Champion, attending and organising events to raise awareness of Type 2 diabetes, highlighting risk factors and signposting to local services that can improve self-management and prevention of the condition.
