Olivia, who attended our Type 1 family event as a nine-year-old girl, benefitted so much from the weekend, she's now a regular volunteer.
Here she tells why volunteering is such a rewarding experience.
"I became a volunteer at a Type 1 Event just after I’d finished studying at university in 2016 . I finally had some free time and knew exactly what I wanted to do.
Volunteering with Diabetes UK was something I wanted to get involved in since I attended an event myself when I was just 9 years old - a year and a half after I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
I remember having such a fantastic time, trying new things and meeting new people that were just like me. It wasn’t just meeting other children with diabetes, but the majority of adult volunteers had diabetes as well. I felt normal.
"The most enjoyable thing over the weekend is showing children that you can lead a normal life with Type 1 diabetes."
These events run by Diabetes UK are hugely important to families dealing with Type 1 diabetes, and I feel all parents would benefit from attending a weekend. The volunteers include medical professionals and people with diabetes, so almost any questions can be answered during the weekend.
There’s usually a structured question and answer session specifically for any burning questions with a panel of volunteers. But the weekend isn’t just discussing Type 1 diabetes. There’s lots of fun, games and arts and crafts for all ages and each family weekend includes a day trip to somewhere fun - no parents allowed!
"I've met many inspiring young people with Type 1 diabetes alongside their supportive parents and siblings."
Whilst volunteering at family weekends, I've met many inspiring young people with Type 1 diabetes alongside their supportive parents and siblings. For me, the most enjoyable thing over the weekend is showing the children that you can lead a normal life with Type 1 diabetes. You can have fun and fulfil your dreams, it just might take a little bit more effort.
I have continued to volunteer with Diabetes UK because I find the events extremely rewarding and I learn something new every time I volunteer."
