Vaccines remain the best way to protect against coronavirus (Covid), but other treatments called antivirals have now been developed that can be used to treat people as soon as possible after they've been infected.
A national study, called PANORAMIC, run by the University of Oxford is recruiting more than 10,000 people in the UK who have a higher risk of becoming seriously ill with Covid to take new antiviral treatments at home if they've tested positive for Covid.
PANORAMIC will help scientists understand how antivirals work in a highly vaccinated population so that the NHS can develop plans for making antivirals available to people who would benefit from them the most.
People are eligible for PANORAMIC if they:
- Feel unwell with symptoms of Covid that started in the last five days and:
- Have received a positive PCR or Lateral Flow test for Covid.
- Are aged over 50 years or aged 18-49 years with an underlying medical condition that can increase chance of having severe Covid, this includes people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
