Researchers at The University of Leicester would like to recruit people aged over 18, with type 2 diabetes and of black African or black Caribbean heritage, to take part in a study that will assess a new diabetes information and support programme designed for people of black African and black Caribbean heritage (the HEAL-D programme).
Those who are eligible and consent to participate will be randomly assigned to one of two groups:
- the intervention group, who will receive the HEAL-D programme
- the control group, who will receive the usual diabetes information and support programme that is provided by the NHS in their local area.
Participants will decide if they want to attend their course face-to-face or using online video calling facilities. The HEAL-D programme includes eight sessions, each of 2 hrs duration, delivered over a 6-month period. The time commitment of the diabetes information programmes for the control group varies depending on the programme, but is typically 6-12 hours.
All participants will also attend 4 face-to-face visits with the research team over 2 years, to undergo some measurements like a blood test, blood pressure, and questionnaires. Everyone will be reimbursed £50 per visit (up to £200), plus travel expense up to £10 per visit.
