The number of children and young people with Type 2 diabetes is rising.
Type 2 diabetes in children and young people is a more aggressive form of the condition than Type 2 diabetes in adults. There are challenges around the diagnosis, management and monitoring of Type 2 diabetes in children and young people. Interventions need to be in place to prevent Type 2 diabetes and a significant part of this is reducing the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children.
We developed this position statement through a review of the current literature, a review of the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit and Scottish Diabetes Audit. We also consulted with medical, nursing and dietetic experts in the field of Type 2 diabetes in children and young people, and attended international conferences.
Diabetes UK recommends that for children and young people with Type 2 diabetes, the guidance published by the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes(ISPAD) should be followed for diagnosis and treatment.
