Euan took on a sky dive for Diabetes UK
On August 15, 2014, Euan from Largs took on a 10,000 foot skydive to raise funds for Diabetes UK at St Andrews in Fife.
The sports coach decided to raise funds to help Diabetes UK to care for, connect with and campaign alongside people living with the condition because both of his sisters have Type 1 diabetes.
Here, Euan talks about his amazing experience, and what inspired him to take on the jump.
“My oldest sister, who is now 32, was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 10, so she has experienced a variety of ways on how to deal with her diabetes. My second oldest sister, who is now 30, was diagnosed at the age of 23.
“From a brother's point of view, it was a tragic experience for me and my family when they were diagnosed. My sister Rhona was extremely sporty when she was younger, and being diagnosed with diabetes changed her way of living dramatically for a period of time. Both my mum and dad have given both my sisters and myself unconditional support throughout the experience,” says Euan.
“What has made things easier for both my sisters has been their positive outlook on life. They are both extremely inspirational to me, and are always positive towards life as a whole, although they do still have their down points. If I could take it away from my sisters I would - they have helped and supported me to make me realise that you should live life to the full.
“Last year, I ran the 10K in the Great Scottish Run for Diabetes UK. At Christmas, I got two diabetes bird symbols tattooed on my left shoulder with my sisters’ first initial in each of them to show my unconditional support. So, I was thinking how I could 'up my game' to show how much I appreciate and my respect them for what they have to experience on a day to day basis. I decided jumping out of a plane at 10,000 feet would make my sisters more proud than ever before.
“I have always wanted to do a skydive, and I thought, raising money for the exceptional charity of Diabetes UK Scotland was the perfect way (to do it). I believe the work they do to support people that have diabetes is second to none. I also wanted to give something back for my sisters and to show them how much I believe in and treasure them.
“I am a huge believer of faith, and if you have faith and want to do something such as a skydive or a marathon, (I would say) go and do it. You are only on this planet for a short period of time, so live life to the full and enjoy every aspect of it. Taking on a fundraising challenge is exciting and enjoyable, as you can set up a variety of fundraising events for friends and family to participate in."Euan has already raised more than £300 through an online donation page.
