At 7 years old, there wouldn’t be many children who would happily forgo their birthday presents to help raise money for a local charity but one Bangor girl did just that.

Abie Jackson raised £375 for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland and has helped raise further awareness about Type 1 diabetes among family and friends who all kindly donated to her cause.

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the local Lisburn Diabetes UK Support Group, a Living with Diabetes Day was hosted at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club for anyone living with Type 2 diabetes or anyone caring for someone with Type 2 diabetes. The purpose of the day was to provide more information about diabetes and empower people to live well with this lifelong condition.

Diabetes UK Northern Ireland Volunteer Development Manager, Heather Causer, said, 'We dedicated a lot of time on the day to learning about managing diabetes and all the different aspects of the condition that needed attention.

The Key, 13 Dunluce Street in Larne, recently opened and has been busy raising money for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland and Parkinson’s Trust charities. The charities received the first cheque presentation from The Key with a donation of £1,125 from efforts since the shop opened in July 2017.

On World Diabetes Day, Northern Ireland’s fastest growing electricity provider, Click Energy NI, has announced that Diabetes UK Northern Ireland will become its official charity of the year for 2018.

Selected by the Click Energy team, the charity partnership will help Diabetes UK Northern Ireland to raise awareness of the condition and provide support to people living with diabetes through a number of initiatives set to launch in 2018.

Omagh mum Lorraine Reid is entering the festive spirit and has organised a Christmas Craft Fair taking place Saturday 2 December at Omagh Golf Club with all proceeds going to Diabetes UK Northern Ireland.

Lorraine’s daughter, Zarah, aged 5, is living with Type 1 diabetes and after the shock diagnosis, they decided to help the local charity raise awareness and funds to help the diabetes community in Northern Ireland.

Lorraine said, ‘When Zarah was diagnosed we couldn’t believe it. This is a lifelong condition that as a family, we have had to learn how to manage, but one day, it will be up to Zarah to manage her Type 1 diabetes herself.

The family of Tony McGuckin Snr would like to thank the local community for their help and support for the fundraising events held in honour of the late Mr McGuckin.

Tony McGuckin Snr sadly passed away last year and his family organised a number of events to help raise awareness and funds for the charity, Diabetes UK Northern Ireland.

Naomi Breen, National Fundraiser for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland, said, ‘We would like to thank everyone who helped and supported the fundraising events and who kindly donated, raising a fantastic total of £1250.
