The Seven Towers Male Voice Choir is holding their ever popular annual concert on 23 and 24 March and has selected us as their charity to collect donations on both nights.

The Braid Arts Centre in Ballymena is the venue for the concert and the night also boasts guest artists, Clover Watts and Jake Houston.

Here at Diabetes UK Northern Ireland, we organised an event on Saturday, 24 February, which brought people from all over Northern Ireland together to share experiences and identify ways that the local diabetes community can make change happen.

At the ‘Make Change Happen’ event Jillian Patchett, Diabetes UK National Director in Northern Ireland, revealed that Click Energy has selected Diabetes UK Northern Ireland as its charity of the year for 2018.

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes in Northern Ireland has increased by 62.5% in the last decade, according to new analysis released today by us here at Diabetes UK Northern Ireland.

The new figures show that there are now 92,480 people diagnosed with the condition, an increase of 35,556 adults compared with 2007.

Newtownabbey woman, Karen Law, was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and decided to take on a special challenge for us. 

Karen said: "As a nurse, I did recognise the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes but when I heard the diagnosis I was still taken aback.

It will soon be time to pull on our trainers and get moving for the Belfast City Marathon, taking place on Monday, 7 May 2018. There is a range of activities available − from the full marathon and the team relay, to the fun run and the eight-mile walk.

There are over 100,000 people living with diabetes in Northern Ireland. Diabetes is a serious condition, where there is too much glucose in the blood because the body cannot use it properly.

Two leading Consultants in the Western Trust will be guest speakers at the upcoming Foyle Area Diabetes UK Support Group meeting, taking place on Thursday 8 February at 7.00pm at the Healthy Living Centre, Old Library Trust Creggan.

Dr Neil Black and Dr Athinyaa Thiraviaraj will be on hand to answer any questions on diabetes and provide information about this complex and, at times, overwhelming, lifelong condition.

Members of Rosario Youth Football Club raised a fantastic £3,100 for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland. The club organised two very successful fundraising events in Belfast – a Gala Ball at City Hall and a pub quiz at the Parador Hotel on Ormeau Road.

Rosario’s Chairperson Ciara Boyes said, ‘We are pleased to present Diabetes UK Northern Ireland with a donation of £3,100 and so grateful for the support we received from our members.

Diabetes UK is looking for healthcare professionals from Northern Ireland to lead improvements in diabetes care. The charity is searching for consultants, nurses, GPs, dietitians, podiatrists, pharmacists and psychologists to take part in its Clinical Champions programme.

The award-winning initiative launched in 2014, in partnership with Novo Nordisk, to address the significant variation in patient care and treatment for people living with diabetes in the UK.
