Young adults take to the kitchen with Diabetes UK Cymru
Below is a short film showing young adults aged 18-30 taking part in Diabetes UK Cymru’s first cookery school. Participants were invited to spend the evening cooking a three course Italian meal under the guidance of an expert Italian chef.
The evening included talks from a dietitian and a young person living with Type 1 diabetes and covered information and practical tips that could be followed when planning and preparing healthy meals.
The evening was an opportunity for young people to come together and gain confidence cooking fresh, healthy meals.
Developing skills for the future
The evening was a huge success, with all attendees noting how much they gained from being a part of the cookery school. Many of these young people had little experience of cooking from scratch, and it was a new experience to be charged with whipping up a full three courses.
From increased skills and confidence in the kitchen, to a greater depth of knowledge of carbohydrate counting
and, ultimately, a realisation of the importance of self management and diabetes care. All that, plus a whole host of delicious Italian food to eat!
Modern life and diet
In our fast-paced society, it's often easy to rely on convenience foods and pre-prepared meals, particularly if you're leaving home for the first time.
It's a misconception that people with Type 1 diabetes have got a hugely-restricted diet. A healthy diet for someone without diabetes should be the same as a diet for someone with Type 1 diabetes.
That was the message the evening aimed to convey - that the attendees could cook delicious, simple meals to
help manage their diabetes, without feeling restricted or bored by their food. It's really nice meeting people and experiencing this - I didn't realise how many people feel the same way and experience the same thing. Before, I hid myself in a little bubble.
It's amazing what you can do when you try!
