Working together to share expertise on weight loss, long-term healthy eating and diabetes.
Diabetes UK and Slimming World are joining forces in a three-year partnership. Together, we’ll aim to support people living with all types of diabetes, and those at risk of developing type 2, to manage their weight in a way that works for them.
An estimated 5 million people are living with diabetes in the UK. Around 13.6 million are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and many of these people find keeping to a healthy weight a struggle. In fact, around 60% of people with type 1 diabetes and around 85% of people with type 2 diabetes are living with overweight or obesity.
This partnership has never been more needed than it is today.
“We know that losing even 5% of your weight helps improve blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This can have a big impact on your overall health and go a long way to reducing your risk of serious complications, like heart disease and stroke,” says Douglas Twenefour, Diabetes UK Head of Care.
Our partnership will focus on three main areas over the coming years:
- Sharing, developing and co-creating healthy and affordable recipes.
- Information and resources that support people living with all types of diabetes or at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and address the misconceptions around diabetes and weight loss. Together we will ensure that Slimming World materials are inclusive and reflect the challenges of life with diabetes.
- Raising awareness of all type of diabetes and tackling misconceptions through sharing stories from people who have been through or are still on a weight management journey.
We’re proud to be working with Slimming World, who have more than 55 years’ experience of supporting their members to lose weight and keep it off. Together, we can continue our vital work in supporting people living with and at risk of diabetes and continue to strive for a world where diabetes can do no harm.
