Our Lives, Our Voices, a project for young people living with type 1 diabetes in Northern Ireland, is excited to announce its latest programme, We are type 1, starting this month.
Our Lives, Our Voices
The Our Lives, Our Voices project is supported by Diabetes UK Northern Ireland and funded by the National Lottery Community Fund NI. Having been designed by young people living with type 1 diabetes, it supports others to gain confidence in managing all aspects of type 1 diabetes. Working in partnership with local mental health charities AWARE and Action Mental Health, this is the first time a youth-led programme for young people with type 1 diabetes in Northern Ireland has been delivered.
Project Co-Ordinator, Carl McKeating said, ‘We are really excited to launch this latest programme for young people aged 11-17, who are living with type 1 diabetes. The “We are type 1” programme offers young people the opportunity to meet others who understand what it is like to live with this relentless condition.'
‘We talk about diabetes distress and burnout, we talk about self-care when managing diabetes, how to address the stigma of living with diabetes, and most importantly, show there is a support network of young people across Northern Ireland who know what you are going through. Together, we want to work towards a future where diabetes can do no harm.’
Getting involved
The programme is free to attend and will be interactive, as well as providing the opportunity meet other young people living with type 1 diabetes in Northern Ireland.
