Diabetes UK Cymru is calling for people to put on their running shoes and tackle the 13.1 miles of the iconic Swansea Half Marathon on Sunday 17 October. This multi award-winning event is now back on track, after being cancelled in 2020 and postponed from June in 2021 due to COVID-19.
Joseph Cuff, regional fundraiser at Diabetes UK Cymru, said: “We’re delighted that the Swansea Half Marathon is back on. After the lockdowns and cancellations of live events, it will be an opportunity for dozens of people who miss races to join and fundraise for our charity. The Swansea event has a very special atmosphere, including six miles of stunning coastline, and is known for bringing people together in the diabetes community.”
The CEO of Front Runner Events, who organise the JCP Swansea Half Marathon, David Martin-Jewel said:
“As a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes, it is great to work so closely with Diabetes UK Cymru and help raise awareness and funds for the incredibly important work they do. Since 2018, we have worked closely with and have achieved some wonderful things together, such as setting a world record for the most people living with type 1 to run a half marathon. This year is of great importance for the charity sector that is still feeling the full impact of the pandemic and the loss of opportunities to raise awareness and vital funds. Knowing how type 1 diabetes affects families particularly when people are first diagnosed, it is vital that people can and do run for Diabetes UK Cymru.”
Paula Stockley, 41, a Swansea Council officer chose Diabetes UK for this race as she nearly lost her younger sister, Laura to undiagnosed Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults in 2013. Four years later, after a bout of ill health, Paula herself was also diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
An experienced runner, who takes part in more than 10 races a year, including the London marathon, Paula said: “I love the Swansea Half, because it's flat and fast and takes in the wonderful views of Swansea Bay as well as other landmarks in the city. The crowds are fantastic and support everyone from the first to the last. I'm really looking forward to taking part this year just to be back in the race atmosphere.”
