The number of people diagnosed with diabetes in Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly rose from 33,730 in 2021 to 35,523 in 2022. In response to the rising figures, we're working closely with the Cornwall community to raise awareness of the condition and provide support to people affected by it.
About the Diabetes UK event
We’re hosting an event in Treverbyn, mid Cornwall, which will give local people the opportunity to not only meet with the South West and South Central team, but also meet others who are affected by the condition.
The ‘Community Day’ will take place on 11th July at Treverbyn Community Hall from 9.30am to 5pm. Locals are encouraged to drop by for a day of conversation, crafts and refreshments.
There will be a range of talks and a chance to ask questions and share experiences with others.
The talks will cover the following topics:
- 10 to 11am: Let’s talk about feet
- 11 to 12pm: Local access to tech
- 12 to 1pm: A chat about food and cooking
- 1 to 2pm: What care to expect
Refreshments will be available on the day, as well as outdoor activities for children. There will also be crafting activities which will act as a starting point for conversations around sharing personal experiences of diabetes.
Spencer Wimbleton is a Diabetes UK Volunteer who lives in Cornwall, and has type 2 diabetes. He said:
“Many remote villages in Cornwall don’t have easy access to support like this. I’d really encourage local people to make the most of it.
“I’ve seen first-hand how beneficial it can be to connect with others who live with diabetes. So, it’s a great opportunity to chat with other people who live with the condition, to share experiences and tips for how to cope.”
Meet the team there on the day
Phaedra Perry, Head of Diabetes UK – South West and South Central
Phaedra heads up the south west and south central team and works to improve diabetes awareness, care and support services across the region. She shared:
“Living with diabetes can be challenging, particularly if you live in a remote area, or feel like you don’t have a strong support network. We hope that this day will provide practical advice and guidance. As well as offering a friendly ear to anyone who would like to talk about their experiences of living with the condition.”
Connie Thomas, Engaging Communities and Volunteering Manager
Connie works with Diabetes UK volunteers and communities across the region to raise awareness and create initiatives to support those living with diabetes. She added:
“The Diabetes UK south west and south central team are passionate about supporting people in every corner of Cornwall. We hope this Community Day will be a good opportunity for people living with the condition to get the support they deserve.”
