A group to connect people in Brent who have diabetes is ready to welcome new members.
The Brent Diabetes UK Community Group helps people living with type 2 diabetes, through talks, information and peer support. The group meets every other Thursday (on the first and third Thursday of the month).
The co-ordinator is Gloria Travers who was one of the founding members of the group in 2002. She said:
“We are a very friendly and non-judgemental group of people who want to help each other and share our experiences.”
Diabetes is a condition where there is too much glucose in the blood because the body cannot use it properly. If not managed well, type 2 diabetes can lead to devastating complications.
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of preventable sight loss in people of working age in the UK and is a major cause of lower limb amputation, kidney failure and stroke.
Jill Steaton, Head of South East Coast and London for Diabetes UK, said:
“Diabetes can be a difficult condition to manage and people can really learn from each other. Local groups such as Gloria’s really help people find a balance between living their lives and keeping in good health.”
The next group meeting will take place on Thursday 17 November 2022, at the Chalkhill Community Centre, 113 Chalkhill Road, HA9 9FX from 11am - 12.30pm.
