A product developer from Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex is taking on the challenge of walking London’s iconic bridges to raise money for Diabetes UK.
Jerry Oughton, 60, who works in the education sector, was inspired to take on the 10-mile challenge, which will take place on Sunday, 29 September, because he lives with type 2 diabetes. His wife Susie will also walk.
He said:
“My diagnosis of diabetes came as a rude awakening. I was in hospital after having emergency surgery when the doctor asked about my diabetes management. That was the first I knew about it - although I have subsequently discovered that it does run in my family.
“Once I had the diagnosis I started to learn as much as I could about diabetes and I was given leaflets from Diabetes UK which were very helpful. I changed my diet, lost weight and returned to the gym which I do love but had let slip during the Lockdowns.
“Luckily, I have always enjoyed walking so it has been easy to increase my miles and I know it helps me physically, mentally and even financially as I always walk around town rather than get the bus.”
Jill Steaton, Head of South East Coast and London Region for Diabetes UK, said:
“Our much-needed work wouldn’t be possible without the determination and generosity of our incredible fundraisers and it’s inspiring to hear about Jerry and Susie’s efforts on our behalf.
“We’re very grateful to them for their commitment. The money raised will help fund ground-breaking research, care services and campaigns that can change the lives of those living with diabetes.”
