Changes to NDA core audit data collection

31 March 2015

The National Diabetes Audit (NDA) will collect 2 years’ worth of data in the next 5 months. This will enable the audit to publish data earlier than in previous years. The NDA has also moved to anfor collecting Primary Care data, changing the way that some practices participate in the audit.

Timescales for Primary Care data collection

Audit year 1st January 2013 to 31st March 2014:

Audit year 1st January 2014 to 31st March 2015:

Both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 reports will be published at the end of 2015. Diabetes UK will keep you updated with a revised date closer to the time.

Process for the opt-in system

How GP practices can opt-in will depend on which system they use:

  • there will be an alert on the system to ask practices to tick a box to enable data extraction
  • this will be the same as last year. No additional action required
  • practices will need to undertake a MiQuest query. By uploading data via a query, they are opting in to the audit. The MiQuest query is usually done with support from CCG

It is important that all practices take part in the audit. The NDA Core Audit data is a key component of the National Pregnancy in Diabetes Audit, and will be a key component of the National Diabetes Foot Care Audit. Low participation in the core audit will also impact the data for these 2 further audits.

Through participation, local services are able to benchmark their performance and identify where they are performing well. This will improve the quality of treatment and care they provide. On a national level, wide participation in the audit also provides an overview of the quality of care being provided in England and Wales.

The NDA is a major national clinical audit, which measures the effectiveness of diabetes healthcare against NICE Clinical Guidelines and NICE Quality Standards, in England and Wales. It is delivered by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC), in partnership with Diabetes UK.
